Appendant Bodies, So many Hats and Symbols

Appendant Bodies, So many Hats and Symbols

If you want to delve into some further masonic teaching or social gatherings, there are many, so called, appendant bodies to look into.  All of these require you to be a master mason in good standing.

Scottish Rite consists of degrees from 4th thru 32nd degree.  They have an honorary 33rd degree also.  Each of the degrees is presented in dramatic presentations that teach moral lessons and personal growth.  Many Scottish Rite temples do some of the degrees as power point presentations however.  They seek to:

·         Aid mankind's search for identity and destiny in God's universe.

·         Produce wiser men in a wiser world, happier men in a happier world, and therefore better men in a better world.

·         Promote the dignity of every person and  humanity in all activities.

It is divided into the Southern Jurisdiction and Northern Jurisdictions.

Albert Pike revised many of the degrees between 1861 and 1883.  The motto is “ordo ab chao”  meaning order from chaos.  The degree names of the Southern Jurisdiction are

Secret Master, Perfect Master, Intimate Secretary, Provost and Judge, Intendant of the Building, Elu of the Nine, Elu of the Fifteen, Elu of the Twelve, Master Architect, Royal Arch of Solomon, Perfect Elu, Knight of the East, Prince of Jerusalem, Knight of the East and West, Knight Rose Croix, Grand Pontiff, Master of the Symbolic Lodge, Noachite, Knight of the Royal Axe, Chief of the Tabernacle, Prince of the Tabernacle, Knight of the Brazen Serpent, Prince of Mercy, Knight Commander of the Temple, Scottish Knight of Saint Andrew, Knight Kadosh, Inspector Inquisitor, Master of the Royal Secret.

This is many more names that Queen Denary’s had on Game of Thrones.

There are about 1.7 million Mason in the United States and about 550,000 are Scottish Rite Masons.

Below is a link to petition Scottish Rite in Louisville, there is one time fee of $250.00, and annual dues of $100.00.  They meet every other Thursday at 6:30pm

York Rite is similar to Scottish Rite in that they also have further degrees.  It is named after York, in Yorkshire, England, where the Rite was supposedly first practiced.  They have 3 distinct bodies called Chapter of Royal Arch which has 4 degrees, Council of Royal and Select Masters which has 3 degrees and Commandery of Knight Templar which has 3 more degrees for a total of 10.  To be a Commandery member however requires being a Christian.  The York Rite teaches the lost word and masonic cryptics.

York Rite supports the Knights Templar Eye Foundation and Cryptic Masons Medical Research Foundation.  There are about 3,000 Chapter in North America.  The petition can be found at

AAHMED GROTTO is another organization, formed to have social interaction and fun, but with Masonry at its heart. The slogan is Good Fellowship. There are about 133 grottoes in the US and 1 in Canada.  The Order of Veiled Prophets, while proclaiming the loyalty of its members to Masonry, makes no pretense of being a Masonic Order, nor does it claim to confer a Masonic degree. Its membership is exclusively Masonic and its purpose is to supply the element of play such a way that work and play will be blended without marring the solid beauty of Masonry. The Grotto is said to be essentially Masonic in character.

The requirements for membership in the Order of Veiled Prophets is that a man must first be a Master Mason in good standing, and that he must continue to maintain his good standing in the Blue Lodge in order to retain his standing in the Order. In no way does the Grotto infringe upon the rights and ceremonies of Masonry or of any other Order.  They support several charities, the main one is Dentistry for special needs children.

The Grotto leads it votaries through an Enchanted Realm where the spirit of mirth touches the hearts and evolves cheerful companionship, in joy of which they are brought near together in helpful sympathy, which is none the less true because the eye beams with delight and laughter goes with a Prophet’s greeting when hand clasps hand in its mystic fellowship.  It also is a place to bring spouses who have their own get togethers and socialize.  To find out more check out this website:

The Order of the Amaranth is a Masonic-affiliated organization for Master Masons and their Ladies founded in 1873. As in the Order of the Eastern Star, members of the Order must be age 18 and older; men must be Master Masons; and women must be related to Masons as wives, mothers, daughters, widows, sisters, nieces, aunts, et cetera.  As of 2017, women without masonic relationships may apply for membership with the sponsorship of two master masons in good standing.

Amaranth was based on the Order of Amarante created by Queen Christina of Sweden on 6 January 1653 for ladies and knights. It lasted only to 1654 when Christina of Sweden abdicated.

In 1860, James B. Taylor of Newark, New Jersey drew upon Queen Christina's order to create a new fraternal society. In 1873, Robert Macoy organized Taylor's society into the Order of the Amaranth, part of a proposed Adoptive Rite of Masonry. Eastern Star was to be the first degree, and Amaranth the third. Amaranth members were required to be members of the Order of the Eastern Star until 1921, when each became their own separate organizations.

In the Order's teachings, the members are emphatically reminded of their duties to God, to their country and to their fellow beings. They are urged to portray, by precept and example, their belief in the "Golden Rule" and by conforming to the virtues inherent in TRUTH, FAITH, WISDOM and CHARITY they can prove to others the goodness promulgated by the Order.

Amaranth is organized into Courts, under Grand Courts at the State level. The primary body is called the Supreme Council. Women members of the Order are addressed as "Honored Lady", while men are referred to as "Sir Knight".

Some of the charities supported are:

Scholarship Funds.

▪ Nurses’ Training.

▪ Care for the Elderly

▪ Soup Kitchens

▪ Ronald McDonald’s House
